Merdeka Square is a focal point for Jakarta city which has many government buildings such as the ministry office, the presidential office, and even the landmark of Jakarta (National Monument) located in the middle of Merdeka square.
Visit the National Monument which is in the middle of Merdeka Square is a 132 Meter tall monument with a gold-leaf flame on top, symbolizing the nation’s independence. This is one of the highlights of Jakarta City. The basement of the monument houses an exhibit of 48 dioramas depicting the history of Indonesia from prehistoric times to the present. (Every Monday, National Monument is closed. You can only visit the outside area of the monument).
Located in Jalan Lapangan Banteng Utara, The Cathedral built in gothic style dates back to 1891. It has a high tower with high windows decorated with glass paintings. Inside the church are 3 altars that together form a semi-circle. It also has a beautiful old altar that reflects sound like a conch shell.
Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Indonesia is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth largest mosque in the world in terms of worshipper capacity. Istiqlal, which means “Independence” in Arabic. Located in the city center, almost opposite the National Cathedral, the Mosque is also meant to be a symbol of peace and religious tolerance. Note: Istiqlal mosque is closed every Friday.
