Angaga is the best place for a good holiday

We are highly recommended Angaga island. Very friendly staff and a great service. Clean and comfortable room - we were at water bungalow. Magical views and adrenaline water activities. We will come back again for sure!

A traditional Maldivian resort that keeps a foot in the past

My wife and I travelled out to Angaga for my 65th birthday, as a revisit, following my first stay on the island some 35 years ago(!). It was, what I would have called a 'traditional' Maldivian holiday resort 'back in the day', with sandy floors and individual thatched bungalows and has certainly tried to keep with that tradition, rather than the generic corporate holiday resorts, that have appeared everywhere, in this Indian Ocean paradise. The flight by sea-plane from Hulhulé (Velana International) was a little noisy but a new experience and only took ~25mins and we were well welcomed by the staff at Angaga Island resort and Spa. The general welcoming chat was short but very informative and well spoken in English, although this is mainly German tourist resort (we felt). We were shown to our beach bungalow and were immediately impressed with the quality of what was to be our abode for the next two weeks. The bed was larger, firm(ish) and comfortable, the air-con effective, even on the lowest (quietest) setting and the bathroom new, modern and better than we expected. On our first exploratory walk, we saw that although there are plenty of large expanses of white fine sand beaches, and every bungalow receives their own dedicated loungers and a little private area, there are signs of erosion on the North End of the island. There was remedial work being carried out on this, but worth checking out. We were visiting with a Half-Board plan and both of our meals were from the well stocked buffet. There was ALWAYS something to tempt us on the daily changing selection and we were NEVER disappointed with what was on offer. Both of the bars were well stocked but don't expect a cheap hangover, as prices are what you'd expect to pay in an upmarket London club. A half-pint-lager was $4.50 and cocktails up to $10.50 (and above) for my 'Long Island Iced Tea'..! The snorkelling was good with many rocky outcrops and coral heads to enjoy and the coral was getting back to it's former glory, with Angaga actively farming new corals to transplant back onto the reefs. Good for you Angaga. The dive shop was expertly staffed and Marina and Olli were very helpful in getting this aging Divemaster back into shape..! Good, reliable and well maintained SCUBA gear is available to hire and prices are reasonable. An acclimatisation dive and two boat dives was less than $250, which was fine by me. We (my wife and I) wanted a relaxing holiday, following the well known trials and tribulations of the Covid pandemic, and Angaga Island Resort fitted the bill perfectly. The shifting sands of the island are being addressed and it's good (for us) to find a resort, where the palm trees are still higher than the buildings (an old by-law now seemingly forgotten). I could not recommend a visit to Angaga strongly enough, if you want to experience a 'No News, No Shoes' getaway break, although we NEVER had a problem with the Wi-Fi connect-ability either. The staff are first-rate, polite and will get things done for you if asked. The food excellent and it was great to find an omelette chef who knew his stuff, and enhanced breakfast. Our bungalow (147) was perfect, spacious, clean, well maintained and no more than 20 paces from the beach. We will be going back..!!

Very good deal...

I chose this island for several reasons. Firstly, it was a really good deal given the fact that the seaplane was included in the price (that can set you back several £100s; I booked with Destination2) Secondly, it gave me the impression of being a small island and not crowded. I wanted peace and quiet, being able to enjoy the silence while looking at the ocean, listening to the waves, reading a book and falling asleep in the swing bed... Well, that is exactly how it went. In that sense, this island is ideal. It is small; so small, in fact, that you can go around it in ten minutes. Another plus side is the fact that the staff is very friendly and obliging, always smiling and ready to go the extra mile to grant the request. Then why 4 and not 5 stars? I had a bit of a dilemma in deciding; if I were to go by the way I felt there, I would give it a 5. However, if I were to weigh out the shortcomings, than I should go for 4 stars. There were some things that puzzled me, like the fact that the pillow cases were not ironed...When I asked, I was told that they would get creases anyway when they were folded...Or, when I asked for decaffeinated Nescafe sachets for the room, I was told that they do not provide decaffeinated ones...Why? They cannot be more expensive than the ones with the full caffeine in them...so a variety would be welcome...The room was cleaned daily, the bathroom was new and shiny, the mattress was very comfortable, but...the lampshades were tatty, and stained by the rust of the rims...A little detail I know, but still, a shortcoming. Finally, the shocker was the bathrobes; shreds coming out of them, grey with the passing of time instead of white and frankly un-usable. Personally, I did not want anything like that next to my skin! I suggested they should be completely removed. The food was tasty but not much variety given the fact that it was a small island and had a limited number of guests, not like on bigger island where the variety can be greater without much waste. Another thing that contributed to my detracting a star, which had nothing to do with the organisation of the resort, was the fact that the island did not have much of a sandy beach. In most places it was rocky and with corals, which did not allow for safe swimming. (I am not a confident swimmer) Also the tide was very low in the afternoon, and in the only place where there was a bit of sand, you could only splash in the sea only in the morning and before 2.p.m as in the afternoon the water was up to your waist. So, overall, a pleasant experience and a very good deal. Would I go back? May be.

Much as we remembered

We stayed here 5 years ago and requested to be on the lagoon side as this was where we were before. We got a room where we wanted, which was great-just a couple of rooms along from where we were before. When we went before the north eastern side had virtually no beach, but now in 2023 this side now has a lovely wide beach. There is some loss on the lagoon/water bungalow side but not as bad as it was on the other side 5 years ago. They still have the budgies flying free all over the place, but we think regarding the Macaws that they should have a much larger cage so they can fly around properly. The cage they are in is too small for 2 such large birds. Angaga management please consider doing this. The room was as we remembered and we much prefer the indoor bathrooms to the outside ones on most of the other islands we have been to. Using the bathroom in the middle of the night is not a pleasant experience when open to the elements and wildlife! I also find the heat in outside bathrooms counter productive so that once you have showered and feel clean and fresh, before you get back into the rooms you are hot and sticky again! Please don't ever change to outside bathrooms Angaga!! The bars and restaurant were also much as we remembered. We could always find something we both liked in the restaurant, but feel the choices were a bit lacking at times. They don't due themed nights like other places we have stayed and it would have been nice to have some more specific Maldivian dishes on offer more often. We loved going to the sundown bar after dinner as it was nice and quiet and you usually got a nice breeze there too. We felt that the reef seemed to be recovering with lots of new growth and plenty of fish too. We saw turtle, black & white tipped reef sharks, octopus, batfish, eel, Anemone fish etc. etc. We did see some rays, but not when we were snorkelling unfortunately. Keep up the good work Angaga and maybe we'll come and see you again soon

Mixed Feeling

This was the third time we visited Angaga Island. What a beautiful place, even a few weeks later when writing this review, I still remember the holiday with pleasure. We booked half-board, i.e. breakfast/dinner and this was plenty with a super buffet and great service. We never used our shoes or sandals in the 10 days, with the sand being cleaned daily. Staff at reception was very helpful and polite. The bars were good and surprisingly not overly expensive. Angaga also offers decent excursions, we participated in the fishing and the snorkelling one. Now to the not so good parts.... sadly, the reef population has reduced significantly since our last visit which is not a complete surprise. Although Angaga is trying to build artificial reefs, which is very good in itself, access to the reef for snorkelling is rather difficult as the reef is rather high up and the danger to injure yourself therefore increased. We stayed in the "old" water bungalows (there are some new versions available too), which are lovely inside, and being stood up on wooden posts. It was shocking to see the state of these posts due to water damage. It was shocking as it looked they could collapse when you jump inside the bungalow. I am not comfortable to stay in one of those again. Apart from the health risk, even if imagined by us, we heard from staff that Angaga plans to build more water bungalows. We therefor also feel the atmosphere of a small "barefoot" island is going to be ruined, so we sadly said our goodbyes. But thanks again for all the great times we had there.
